Living in the 1800s

Last week our water heater went out.  We had to endure three days with no hot water.  The first day was okay to go without a bath or shower, but by the second day I felt that we were needing a bath or shower.  We had recently visited Old World Wisconsin and learned in one of the houses about how the people would boil their water on the stove to heat it up for baths.  I felt this would be a great opportunity for us to experience life in the 1800s in our own home!

So we filled up pots with water and heated up the water on the stove and slowly, oh so slowly, filled up our bathtub.  It took about 30 minutes to fill it up.  We were able to add cold water to the boiling water to help fill the tub faster.

My boys learned first hand how blessed we are to have hot water every time we turn on the faucet.  Do not take it for granted!  It’s a lot of work to fill up a tub with hot water from the stove!
